a family found five or six grenades in a paper bag in san francisco earlier today. police responded to that potrero hill neighborhood around 8:00 this morning. they couldn't determine if those grenades were real or fake so they called in bomb technicians and shut down streets in the area. >> what we're understanding, the owner of the building was a 92-year-old man that passed away sometime ago and the family was now cleaning out the garage of all his personal effects. >> the bomb squad robot gathered the grenades and took them away. no word if they were real. police dogs sniffed the garage to make sure there were no other devices. the surrounding streets are back open now after being shut down for about two hours. three fires very close to each other and around the same time, they were in san francisco's castro district this morning. and investigators have their suspicions. christin ayers with what investigators have come up with so far. christin. reporter: red cross officials are on scene and

investigators just left an hour ago. they were here at this one and a second one a block and a half away sorting through the aftermath looking for clues about the cause of the fire. cell phone video captures the third fire in two hours thursday morning in the castro. first, a trash can fire on market street. later, two separate apartment buildings went up in flames within the same hour. >> it's always suspicious having two fires at one time. >> not the kind of thing that happens here all the time. >> reporter: 17 stunned neighbors and their animals got out of this building on 1th and market safely. >> dealing with the situation, finding some place for my wife and me to live. >> reporter: some displaced residents lost everything. >> the whole top floor of the main fire building is pretty well gutted. >> reporter: at the second apartment fire a block and a half away, a different kind of loss. >> i think somebody saw it and saw it as a very easy target. >> reporter: property owner brian kendall says this was more than just an apartment building. it's an historic structure. he has been renovating it since

2009. no one was inside. >> i wish i had never heard it before, never heard somebody going through and burning homes in the same neighborhood. >> reporter: investigators still sorting through debris can't say for certain that's what happened. but neighbors believe there is much more to this than a catastrophic coincidence. now, the property owner we spoke to said the power was out at his apartment overnight. he says that is further proof this is work of an arsonist. some residents have been allowed back inside, but the vehicles working with those whose apartments are too damaged to return. allen? >> guess at this point, christin, hopefully someone saw something and will come forward with the information. >> reporter: hoping, but the timing they were happened in the middle of the night makes it a little tricky. >> thank you, christin ayers in san francisco. they went on a field trip and were rushed back home with a mysterious illness. at least 69 people suddenly got sick at a ranch near petaluma.

most of them were elementary school students. anne makovec on the investigation to pinpoint a cause. >> germs can be really powerful. amazing how something can travel through a camp that quickly. >> reporter: laura's daughter is one of dozens of kids from three bay area schools who got sick to their stomachs during their stay at walker creek ranch. >> to hold it together, i'm so glad i'm home, throws up and goes to sleep. >> reporter: the ranch was hosting a sleepover science camp part of the marin office of education. they were supposed to be there four days but the trip was cut short. the family got called at 9 p.m. last night. >> they were frantic. they wanted to us come and get her we said fine, we'll just come and get her. >> reporter: 44 fifth graders who attend school at redwood day school here at oakland were on the trip. classes cancelled for them here today and the school doesn't even know yet how many of them got sick. >> i think just a handful at first. and obviously, the next 24

hours, if it's a bug we'll get a better number on it. >> reporter: about 250 students total were at the camp, fifth and sixth graders from redwood school in oakland, san ramon elementary school in novato and tassajara hills elementary in danville. the camp is now closed. >> it's no indication it was food-borne. so someone may have brought it into one cabin and it spread from there. >> reporter: anne makovec, cbs 5, oakland,. looting, arson, gangs of thugs it's chaos in cairo again today. for a second straight day, supporters and opponents of egyptian president hosni mubarak are clashing in the streets. now, it is just after 10 p.m. in egypt right now. in tahrir square, where hundreds of anti-government protestors vow not to leave until their president steps down. battles have killed at least 8 people and injuries hundreds of others. now gangs of government supporters are attack foreign journalists. the u.s. has already evacuated more than 2,000 americans and more departures are scheduled today. the obama administration is stepping up pressure on mubarak, a long-time american ally. they want him to leave office immediately. >> and we pray that the violence in egypt will end and that the rights and aspirations of the egyptian people will be realized and that a better day will dawn over egypt. >> president obama made that remark at the morning national prayer breakfast. the white house is warning egypt, u.s. aid will ride on president mubarak's decision. protestors calling for another massive demonstration tomorrow. they have declared it the day of departure, the day they want president mubarak gone. so far, he is refusing to leave before his term is over in

the class action lawsuit says two people are suing safeway for not informing them about recalled food. the class action lawsuit says that the grocery chain has a

legal duty to contact its customers who use the safeway club card. one of the plaintiffs who is from san francisco says she gets a promotional email from safeway every couple of days. but after she bought recalled eggs, she received nothing. >> what this case is about is when safeway has the information and they are able to get it to the consumer, they should just do it. >> other chains with loyalty card programs such as costco and wal-mart do contact their members to inform them about recalls but a safeway spokesman says the ability to contact customers individually is not an industry norm. a major step by caltrain that could lead to drastic cuts. today the board is expected to declare a fiscal emergency. and that would allow caltrain to raise fares and cut service without doing a full environmental review.

caltrain faces a deficit of $30 million, close to a third of its entire operating budget. in other headlines around the bay area, the state is ordering pg&e to cut operating pressure on four natural gas pipeline. the public utilities commission says it has recently run those lines above safety levels. it comes as the puc investigates the explosion in san bruno. a federal prosecutor warns officials in oakland that their city ordinance allowing industrial pot farms is against the law. farmers, property owners and financiers could face prosecution. it's the first time the feds have sent a written warning since that ordinance passed last summer. coming up, the secret of the mona lisa revealed. why one expert it thinks she was reall a"he." >> how this week's jefferson award winner is finding loving homes for it pets. >> enjoy it, folks. the chance we could see some

three people in oklahoma died when their s-u-v the nasty weather in the

midwest may have played a role in a crash. three people in oklahoma died when their suv jumped a guardrail and plunged into a river below. a dive team retrieved the bodies and rescued five others who were rushed to the hospital. some were treated for hypothermia. traffic was shut down for hours. liz conditions in the midwest have -- blizzard conditions in the midwest have given way to bone-chilling temperatures today. in chicago, thousands are still without power and temperatures there are in the single digits. lake shore drive has finally re- opened after hundreds of cars got stuck in the snow. some drivers were stranded there for up to 12 hours. >> can you believe that? i called a friend of mine who lives in chicago, said how are you doing? he said i'm great, i'm in san diego. >> very lucky. but now he has to get back. that's been a problem. >> they have another storm coming in for them, too, don't they lawrence? >> there is another storm coming in this weekend.

they are not done with it yet. for us, wet early on and now pretty dry. now we have lots of sunshine and temperatures above normal. a few high clouds across the skies, with fog at the coast but not a lot. it's patchy. it looks like we are headed for a nice afternoon outside as high pressure is going to hold on and bring you mostly sunny skies just a few of those high clouds continuing to make their way across your skies at the same time. temperatures though we are planning on 50s and mid-60s, not quite as warm as yesterday but it's going to be close. inside the bay upper 50s to the low 60s and toward the coastline you have a mix of sun and fog and temperatures in the 50s. weak system diving over the top of this ridge, you can see some of that high cloud cover trying to make its way across the state. that may help to cool down the temperatures a degree or two but not much. then this weekend is looking like something else. high pressure really going to strengthen and those temperatures are going to soar. probably talk 70s tomorrow in

parts of the bay area. that ridge will keep us high and dry probably for the next few days and as we look toward the end of next week, that whole pattern is likely going to shift. a good chance rain returns to the bay area. temperatures as we look toward the afternoon, 64 degrees in morgan hill, 64 los gatos, about 6 2 mountain view, east bay temperatures a mixed bag. 50s in toward antioch and brentwood but inside the bay, look good, hazy sunshine, 63 in oakland, about 63 in hayward. and 62 degrees in dublin. how about the north bay? well, they are expecting lots of sunshine today. not quite as warm as yesterday, of course, we spiked to 69 in santa rosa yesterday. it's going to get close, about 66 degrees there. 65 mostly sunny in sonoma and about 64 degrees in napa. all right. as we look out over the evening hours, looks like things will cool down in a hurry. overnight lows in the 30s and 40s. not as cold as this morning, some places below freezing but

still chilly in spots. we'll see a ridge of high pressure building in across the bay area, some 70s popping up as early as tomorrow. by the weekend, mid-70s showing up around much of the bay area in the warmer areas. that offshore wind will continue to keep us high and dry through monday and tuesday. but i think toward the end of next week things are going to change drastically. by the way, happy chinese new year, kung hei fat choi. it is the year of the rabbit. we have a great picture here. thanks for sending that in. of course, send those to cbssf.com. that's the latest. back to you. >> the old extreme close-up! thanks. if you have ever been to an animal shelter, you know there are too many pets who need good home and one bay area woman has come up with a unique solution. kate kelly with this week's jefferson award winner. >> hello, babies. >> reporter: when jo hamilton visits the city of palo alto's animal services shelter, she knows what she is looking for. >> i'm looking for an animal that connects. kittens always connect. but it's the adult animals that

i just adore. >> reporter: and since there are so many animals that need a connection, it makes her job difficult. >> if you're not adopted before then, will you come with me next time? >> reporter: eight years ago, jo cofounded come pannions in waiting an animal rescue and adoption organization that first fosters dogs and cats and puts on weekly pet fairs to get them out into the public. animal control officer jeanette washington says that added exposure makes all the difference. >> she has taken many animals from us and found homes for them. she is an asset. it's just another means to get our animals into new homes. >> reporter: today's lucky pup is arnie, a 12-month old beagle- chihauhau mix abandoned on the streets of east palo alto. >> 's taking him to the pet place in menlo park where store owners have allowed her to set up a table to introduce her animals to potential families. the scene is repeated monthly throughout the peninsula and

half moon bay. volunteers help screen prospective parents. cathy gillis wasn't looking for a new pet when she stopped by today but arnie caught her eye. >> i was drawn to him. i was looking at different breeds and sizes and he is a good fit. >> we always send you home to think about it for 24 to 48 hours. records and while getting animals out where they can be seen is important, equally critical is the preparation volunteers do. first fostering most of these pets at home where they can be watched and trained. >> are they shy? do they like other dogs? do they like cats? you know, anything like this that we need to know about so that we can find a really good home for them, the right home for them. >> reporter: those that do find the right home are like family. >> family. jo keeps a scrapbook, 23 last year alone. >> you meet such amazing people and they so love the animals. they keep in touch. one of the families lives now in hawaii. and i still get christmas

today's tip of the day honey tangerines from florida. they are in the market right now. earlier varieties and tangerines are coming in from florida. of course the ones from california, the clementines and others. the honey tangerine to me is loaded with flavor. years ago it was called a mercot. so they changed it to honey tangerine because mother nature like she put honey right inside. a little ugly on the outside when you buy them, a little discoloration, browning. make sure there is no cracking whatsoever. make sure it's like all citrus firm. that's important. a little bit of give is okay. but heavy for the size. the heavier the better. when you bring them home, on the counter always, never in the refrigerator. now, i'm going to come with these honey tangerines. they are hard to peel. they have some seeds. but let me tell you, if you never had a honey tangerine, you have to have one now! they're fantastic.
